The Smurfs, accidental heroes who became global stars! Of all the characters from the world of Belgian comics, the Smurfs are undoubtedly the ones who have become the most famous across the world. And yet, when their spiritual father, Brussels illustrator Pierre Culliford a.k.a. Peyo, first created these little blue imps with his pencil in the autumn of 1958, they were just secondary characters intended to play an ephemeral role in an adventure involving the mediaeval heroes Johan and Pirlouit… The exhibition dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Smurfs describes the origin of these characters and how they turned their creator’s life upside down. Peyo first had to transform himself from a modest comic illustrator into the head of a graphics studio, then into a designer of cartoons and finally into a vigilant businessman in order to control the Smurfs’ destiny.
